Horchata Milkshake: 2 ways – peace. love. quinoa

I’m going to go ahead and say “you’re welcome” because I know you are going to thank me for this {easy} recipe.

Every time I am in Wicker Park, I think about the Horchata Milkshakes at Antique Taco and more often than not, I go for it. I have tried several times to make this milkshake at home based off the 4 ingredients they list on their menu: cinnamon, vanilla, almonds, and banana but I have had some trouble perfecting it…. until now.

Finally, I googled a recipe. I googled several recipes which inspired me to create my own recipe. While this milkshake tastes different than that of Antique Taco, even has a different texture, I am 100% satisfied with it.



Horchata is a combination of rice milk and almond milk. To make these milks (for horchata), you simply blend the ingredient (almond and/or rice) with water and then strain the solids out. So easy.

(I know there are more complicated ways of making more creamy nut milks, but that process is not necessary for this recipe).

Horchata Milkshake: 2 ways

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw long grain white rice
  • ½ whole raw almonds
  • ⅔ cup raw turbinado sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon + a more for garnish
  • 3 frozen bananas (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine rice, almonds, sugar, vanilla, a pinch of cinnamon and 4 cups water in a blender. Blend until the rice and almonds are completely pulverized, about a minute.
  2. Strain through a mesh strainer and discard the blended rice & almonds.

Option 1: ON THE ROCKS

  1. Serve over ice and ganish with cinnamon.

Option 2: BLENDED

  1. Pour the milk back in to the blender and add the frozen bananas.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Serve and garnish with cinnamon.
